Which tools should I get for woodcarving?

 

Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Avoid spending money on cheap carving tools. Many tools can be found in stores. Avoid buying them simply because they are affordable. Wood carving can be relaxing and shouldn't be tough. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

Your tools are yours since you bought them. But don't be afraid of them or handle them badly. They will last longer if you look after them, so here's some advice on how to do that:

– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. Traditional Woodcarvers usually do not use power tools, only to prepare basswood or another type of carvable lumber before carving.
