Dense woods like walnut and oak usually sink in water because they're heavier than water. For carving, dense woods are tough and sturdy but harder to work with. Lighter woods like basswood are easier to carve but not as strong. Shape and surface texture also matter—straight, rough pieces can be easier to handle and float better.
