I visited St. Augustine in Florida, known as the oldest city in the US. In St. Augustine, there’s an old fort called Castillo de San Marcos. I would call it a castle because it marks the start of America.

What explains the acanthus leaf's popularity in ancient Greco-Roman architecture and even in modern times? What a good question to ask. There appears to be a deep, almost magical significance to the acanthus.
In Greek culture, the acanthus leaf is seen as a symbol of the afterlife and the soul's immortality.Acanthus leaf designs can be found from the base of Greek columns all the way to the top of pediments and fancy cornices.
The Greeks included acanthus leaves in their stunning buildings and temples. Acanthus is a hardy plant that can adapt well to different environments. The leaves have been used in Southeast Asia for storing rice because they help draw moisture out of the air, keeping it dry. Acanthus has been used in ancient cultures of China, Russia, India, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and its surrounding islands.

Acanthus leaf designs have been linked to classical Greek architecture since the 5th century BC.
During the Renaissance and medieval ages, artists and builders included the acanthus leaf design in their woodcraft, sculptures, and cornices, as well as in fine art frames and around doors and window frames. During my woodcarving class at a woodworking school, someone came up to me and said.
I never considered acanthus in this way. For me, acanthus was just the style I recognized from Chippendale chairs. That was a revelation for me.
There are clear differences between the Greek acanthus and the Corinthian acanthus motifs. Also, it is completely different from the Roman acanthus design.
