Not long ago, I traveled to St. Augustine in Florida, the oldest city in America. In St. Augustine, there’s an old fort called Castillo de San Marcos. It feels more like a castle because this is where America began.

ACANTHUS LEAF
Why is the acanthus leaf so loved in old buildings from the Greco-Roman times and even today? This is indeed an important question. It seems there is a mystical meaning behind the acanthus leaf.
The ancient Greeks believed that the acanthus leaf stands for the afterlife and the soul's immortality. The acanthus leaf is used in decorations that start at the foot of Greek columns and go all the way up to the beautiful pediments and ornate cornices.
Acanthus leaves were a popular choice for the Greeks to adorn their elaborate buildings and sacred temples. Acanthus is a hardy plant that can adapt well to different environments. In Southeast Asia, the leaves are used to store rice as they absorb moisture from the air, which keeps the rice fresh. The acanthus has been used in places like ancient China, Russia, India, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean region and its nearby islands.

Acanthus Leaf Style
The acanthus leaf motif has been a symbol of classical architecture in Greece since about the 5th century BC.
Throughout the Renaissance and medieval eras, the acanthus leaf design found its way into woodcarvings, sculptures, and cornices, as well as fine art frames and fittings for doors and windows. Today, you can spot the acanthus leaf motif in classical home decor and many public buildings, including the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., and Notre Dame University.
Over time, the acanthus leaf motif has even reached grave sites, symbolizing the afterlife and the soul's immortality.

The Acanthus in Ancient Greek Architecture
If you travel to Greece, explore the ruins of ancient temples and grand palaces. The ancient acanthus design can be found almost everywhere. I am not saying you should believe what they believed. See the creations of ancient Greek builders as pieces of art. You’ll notice that almost every building from ancient times has acanthus motifs carved in them.
There is an interesting change in the design of the acanthus over the years. From century to century, you will see big differences in the acanthus design. If you recognize the acanthus, even tiny details will stand out to you. For example, notice how those artisans detailed the inner section of a leaf.
