I visited St. Augustine in Florida, known as the oldest city in the US. You can find an old fort, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, there. You could call it a castle since America’s history begins here.

ACANTHUS LEAF
Why is the acanthus leaf so loved in old buildings from the Greco-Roman times and even today? This is indeed an important question. The acanthus leaf carries a meaning that feels magical.
The Greeks viewed the acanthus leaf as a sign of the afterlife and that the soul lives on.You can see acanthus leaf designs everywhere, from the bottom of Greek columns to the tops of pediments and decorative cornices.
Greeks loved to decorate their magnificent buildings and temples with acanthus leaves. The acanthus leaf is a tough plant that can adapt to various environments. In Southeast Asia, the leaves are used to store rice as they absorb moisture from the air, which keeps the rice fresh. You can find the acanthus in many places like ancient China, Russia, India, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and even on nearby islands.

Acanthus Leaf Style
Since the 5th century BCE, the acanthus leaf design has been common in Greek classical architecture.
In Renaissance and medieval times, the acanthus leaf was used in wood carvings, sculptures, and cornices, as well as in frames for fine art and around house doors and window casings. Nowadays, you can find acanthus leaf designs in homes with classical styles and in many public buildings, such as the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., and the University of Notre Dame.
Over time, the acanthus leaf motif has even reached grave sites, symbolizing the afterlife and the soul's immortality.
