I recently visited St. Augustine, Florida, which is the oldest city in the USA. There is an old fort called Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. I would call it a castle because it marks the start of America.

What makes the acanthus leaf so popular in ancient architecture and modern designs? This is a great question. It seems there is a mystical meaning behind the acanthus leaf.
According to the ancient Greeks, the acanthus leaf symbolizes the afterlife and the everlasting soul.The acanthus leaf is used in decorations that start at the foot of Greek columns and go all the way up to the beautiful pediments and ornate cornices.
They used acanthus leaves to add beauty to their impressive structures and temples. This plant is very sturdy and has excellent skills for adapting to its surroundings. In Southeast Asia, the acanthus leaves are good for storing rice since they take moisture from the air, which helps keep the rice. Acanthus has been used in ancient cultures of China, Russia, India, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and its surrounding islands.

Acanthus leaf designs have been linked to classical Greek architecture since the 5th century BC.
During the Renaissance and medieval ages, artists and builders included the acanthus leaf design in their woodcraft, sculptures, and cornices, as well as in fine art frames and around doors and window frames. We should know that acanthus is more than just a single type.
I was teaching a woodcarving class in person at a woodworking school, and one student approached me.
– I never thought about acanthus from this point of view. I always thought of acanthus as that design on Chippendale chairs. It opened my eyes to new ideas.
You can tell that the Greek acanthus motif is not like the Corinthian motif. Moreover, it is very different from the Roman version of acanthus.
