I took a trip to St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest city in the United States. This city has an old fort named Castillo de San Marcos. Honestly, it’s like a castle since this is where America really started.

Why is the acanthus leaf so loved in old buildings from the Greco-Roman times and even today? This is a great question. There seems to be a special and almost magical meaning behind the acanthus.
The ancient Greeks believed that the acanthus leaf stands for the afterlife and the soul's immortality.You find acanthus leaves in designs that run from the bottoms of Greek columns to the tops of pediments and fancy crown moldings.
The Greeks used acanthus leaves to decorate their grand buildings and temples. Acanthus is a hardy plant that can adapt well to different environments. The leaves have been used in Southeast Asia for storing rice because they help draw moisture out of the air, keeping it dry. Acanthus has been used in ancient cultures of China, Russia, India, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and its surrounding islands.

Since the 5th century BCE, the acanthus leaf design has been common in Greek classical architecture.
During the Renaissance and medieval ages, artists and builders included the acanthus leaf design in their woodcraft, sculptures, and cornices, as well as in fine art frames and around doors and window frames. Currently, the acanthus leaf motif is present in classical home designs and across many public buildings, from the United States Capitol in D.C. to Notre Dame University.
Over time, the acanthus leaf motif has even reached grave sites, symbolizing the afterlife and the soul's immortality.
Acanthus Leaves with Ancient Greek Architects
If you travel to Greece, explore the ruins of ancient temples and grand palaces. You will find the ancient acanthus motif almost everywhere. I am not saying you should believe what they believed. Look at the work of ancient Greek architects as art. You will see for yourself that there is hardly a building from that time without an acanthus motif carved into it.
You’ll notice an exciting development in how the acanthus design has changed. From century to century, you will see big differences in the acanthus design. If you know about acanthus, you will notice even the smallest details. For example, notice how those artisans detailed the inner section of a leaf.
