What makes the acanthus leaf so popular in ancient architecture and modern designs? That’s an excellent question. There seems to be a special and almost magical meaning behind the acanthus.
According to the ancient Greeks, the acanthus leaf symbolizes the afterlife and the everlasting soul.You find acanthus leaves in designs that run from the bottoms of Greek columns to the tops of pediments and fancy crown moldings.
The Greeks included acanthus leaves in their stunning buildings and temples. This plant is very sturdy and has excellent skills for adapting to its surroundings. In Southeast Asia, people have used the leaves to store rice because they pull moisture from the air, keeping the rice safe. Acanthus has been used in ancient cultures of China, Russia, India, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and its surrounding islands.
Acanthus Leaf Style
Since the 5th century BCE, the acanthus leaf design has been common in Greek classical architecture.
During the Renaissance and medieval ages, artists and builders included the acanthus leaf design in their woodcraft, sculptures, and cornices, as well as in fine art frames and around doors and window frames. Currently, the acanthus leaf motif is present in classical home designs and across many public buildings, from the United States Capitol in D.C. to Notre Dame University.
Through history, the acanthus leaf design has made its way to gravesites, representing the afterlife and the immortality of the soul.

When you visit Greece, check out the ruins of ancient temples and palaces. You will see the ancient acanthus design nearly everywhere. I don’t mean for you to accept their beliefs. View the work of ancient Greek architects as artistic expression. You’ll discover that almost no ancient structures are without acanthus carvings.
There is an interesting change in the design of the acanthus over the years. As you look through the centuries, the acanthus design shows significant changes. Knowing about the acanthus will help you spot even the smallest features. One example is how the artisans crafted the inner part of a leaf.

There are clear differences between the Greek acanthus and the Corinthian acanthus motifs. And it is not at all the same as the Roman acanthus motif.
