Did you ever see carved leaves as part of building or room decor? At art museums, many lovely paintings are surrounded by lovely carved frames. And those frames might have acanthus leaves on them. Acanthus is truly everywhere.
I took a trip to St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest city in the United States. In St. Augustine, there’s an old fort called Castillo de San Marcos. I should really call it a castle because America starts here.

ACANTHUS LEAF
Why do people really like the acanthus leaf in old Greco-Roman buildings and in today’s architecture? That’s an excellent question. The acanthus leaf carries a meaning that feels magical.
The Greeks viewed the acanthus leaf as a sign of the afterlife and that the soul lives on.The acanthus leaf is used in decorations that start at the foot of Greek columns and go all the way up to the beautiful pediments and ornate cornices.
The Greeks used acanthus leaves to decorate their grand buildings and temples. The acanthus leaf is a tough plant that can adapt to various environments. The leaves have been used in Southeast Asia for storing rice because they help draw moisture out of the air, keeping it dry. The acanthus has been used in places like ancient China, Russia, India, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean region and its nearby islands.

Acanthus Leaf Design
Since around the 5th century BC, acanthus leaf motifs have been a key part of Greek classical architecture.
During the Renaissance and medieval periods, craftsmen incorporated acanthus leaf motifs into woodcarvings, sculptures, and cornices, plus they used them in decorative frames and on doors and windows. Today, we see the acanthus leaf motif in homes with classical designs and in many public buildings, like the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., and the University of Notre Dame.
Through history, the acanthus leaf design has made its way to gravesites, representing the afterlife and the immortality of the soul.

If you travel to Greece, explore the ruins of ancient temples and grand palaces. You’ll notice that the ancient acanthus motif is common in many places. I don’t mean for you to accept their beliefs. See the creations of ancient Greek builders as pieces of art. You will find that nearly every old building features some form of acanthus carving.
There is a captivating evolution in the design of the acanthus leaf. From century to century, you will see big differences in the acanthus design. If you recognize the acanthus, even tiny details will stand out to you. For example, how those artisans carved the inner part of a leaf.

I never viewed acanthus from this angle. For me, acanthus was just the style I recognized from Chippendale chairs. It helped me see things differently.
There are clear differences between the Greek acanthus and the Corinthian acanthus motifs. Moreover, it is very different from the Roman version of acanthus.
