What explains the acanthus leaf's popularity in ancient Greco-Roman architecture and even in modern times? What a good question to ask. There seems to be a special and almost magical meaning behind the acanthus.
According to the ancient Greeks, the acanthus leaf symbolizes the afterlife and the everlasting soul.The acanthus leaf is used in decorations that start at the foot of Greek columns and go all the way up to the beautiful pediments and ornate cornices.
The Greeks included acanthus leaves in their stunning buildings and temples. The acanthus is a rugged plant that can handle many conditions. People in Southeast Asia use acanthus leaves to store rice because they draw out moisture from the air, helping to preserve the rice. The acanthus has been used in places like ancient China, Russia, India, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean region and its nearby islands.
Acanthus Leaf Design
Since around the 5th century BC, acanthus leaf motifs have been a key part of Greek classical architecture.
The acanthus leaf was also included in wood carvings, sculptures, and cornices during the Renaissance and medieval times, along with framing fine art and decorating house doors and window casings. Today, you can spot the acanthus leaf motif in classical home decor and many public buildings, including the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., and Notre Dame University.
Over time, the acanthus leaf motif has even reached grave sites, symbolizing the afterlife and the soul's immortality.

When you’re in Greece, visit the ancient ruins of Greek temples and palaces. The ancient acanthus design can be found almost everywhere. I am not saying you should believe what they believed. Look at the work of ancient Greek architects as art. You will see for yourself that there is hardly a building from that time without an acanthus motif carved into it.
You will see an intriguing transformation in acanthus designs throughout the centuries. From century to century, you will see big differences in the acanthus design. If you know about acanthus, you will notice even the smallest details. For example, notice how those artisans detailed the inner section of a leaf.
