The history of the acanthus leaf is tough to follow because many art styles mix and move from nation to nation Many folks have shared stories about ornamental arts, but this Greek Acanthus carving course is not really a history class I understand a little about the acanthus's history, but I don't have a PhD in history.

Have you ever spotted carved leaves used as decorations in buildings? If you go to an art museum, the best paintings are often in beautiful carved frames. The frames likely feature carved acanthus leaves. Acanthus leaves are found everywhere.
I took a trip to St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest city in the United States. There is an ancient fort known as Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. I should really call it a castle because America starts here.

Why is the acanthus leaf so loved in old buildings from the Greco-Roman times and even today? This is a great question. There seems to be a special and almost magical meaning behind the acanthus.
The ancient Greeks believed that the acanthus leaf stands for the afterlife and the soul's immortality.The acanthus leaf design appears throughout, from the bottom of Greek columns to the top of pediments and fancy cornices.
Greeks loved to decorate their magnificent buildings and temples with acanthus leaves. This plant is very sturdy and has excellent skills for adapting to its surroundings. In Southeast Asia, the leaves are used to store rice as they absorb moisture from the air, which keeps the rice fresh. The acanthus has been used in places like ancient China, Russia, India, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean region and its nearby islands.

Starting from the 5th century Before Christ, acanthus leaf patterns became a hallmark of Greek classical architecture.
During the Renaissance and medieval periods, craftsmen incorporated acanthus leaf motifs into woodcarvings, sculptures, and cornices, plus they used them in decorative frames and on doors and windows. Nowadays, you can find acanthus leaf designs in homes with classical styles and in many public buildings, such as the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., and the University of Notre Dame.
Over time, the acanthus leaf motif has even reached grave sites, symbolizing the afterlife and the soul's immortality.
Ancient Greek Architects and the Acanthus
When you’re in Greece, visit the ancient ruins of Greek temples and palaces. You’ll notice that the ancient acanthus motif is common in many places. I’m not suggesting that you adopt their beliefs. View the work of ancient Greek architects as artistic expression. You will find that nearly every old building features some form of acanthus carving.
You’ll notice an exciting development in how the acanthus design has changed. Throughout the years, you will observe major differences in the acanthus leaf design. If you know about acanthus, you will notice even the smallest details. One example is how the artisans crafted the inner part of a leaf.

The motif of Greek acanthus differs from that of the Corinthian style. Moreover, it is very different from the Roman version of acanthus.
