Not long ago, I traveled to St. Augustine in Florida, the oldest city in America. In St. Augustine, there’s an old fort called Castillo de San Marcos. It feels more like a castle because this is where America began.

What explains the acanthus leaf's popularity in ancient Greco-Roman architecture and even in modern times? This is a great question. There seems to be a special and almost magical meaning behind the acanthus.
The ancient Greeks believed that the acanthus leaf stands for the afterlife and the soul's immortality.Acanthus leaf designs can be found from the base of Greek columns all the way to the top of pediments and fancy cornices.
Acanthus leaves were a popular choice for the Greeks to adorn their elaborate buildings and sacred temples. The acanthus plant is strong and tough, with a great ability to adapt. People in Southeast Asia use acanthus leaves to store rice because they draw out moisture from the air, helping to preserve the rice. People have used the acanthus in ancient China, Russia, India, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, and neighboring islands.

Since the 5th century BCE, the acanthus leaf design has been common in Greek classical architecture.
In Renaissance and medieval times, the acanthus leaf was used in wood carvings, sculptures, and cornices, as well as in frames for fine art and around house doors and window casings. Today, we see the acanthus leaf motif in homes with classical designs and in many public buildings, like the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., and the University of Notre Dame.
Over the years, the acanthus leaf design has been associated with graves, representing the afterlife and the soul's immortality.

If you travel to Greece, explore the ruins of ancient temples and grand palaces. You’re likely to discover the acanthus motif in many spots. I’m not suggesting that you adopt their beliefs. Consider the buildings by ancient Greek architects as art. You will see for yourself that there is hardly a building from that time without an acanthus motif carved into it.
You will see an intriguing transformation in acanthus designs throughout the centuries. From age to age, you can observe meaningful changes in the acanthus design. If you recognize the acanthus, even tiny details will stand out to you. For instance, look at how the craftsmen shaped the inside of a leaf.

I had never looked at acanthus like this before. To me, acanthus is just what I’ve often seen on Chippendale furniture. It opened my eyes to new ideas.
The motif of Greek acanthus differs from that of the Corinthian style. And it is absolutely different from the Roman acanthus style.
