This is likely one of the toughest questions.
Which woodcarving tools do I need to purchase?
Does not matter if you just start a wood carving journey or carved for a while, good tools are a MUST! Save your money from being wasted on cheap tools. You will find many tools out there. Refrain from buying them just because they seem cheap. Carving is meant to be relaxing and shouldn't be difficult. Start a wood carving journey with good tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you're a beginner who has never tried carving before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something feels off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is especially important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk about sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
What is the safe way to use your tools?
– Always think about safety when working with wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
If you are worried about safety, use safety gloves while working with woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. And when woodworkers think about safety, they automatically think about power tools. Yet, hand tools are also risky.
I am a seasoned woodcarver and I know my craft. Just ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief carving, low relief carving, round carving, and so on. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
How should you store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
