______

This is probably one of the most difficult question.

Which woodcarving tools do I need to purchase?

Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Save your money from being wasted on cheap tools. Many tools can be found in stores. Don't buy them just because they are cheap. Carving should be enjoyable and not a struggle. Start a wood carving journey with good tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:

– If you're just starting out and have never carved before, the first thing you should do is learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems wrong, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening repeatedly until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could hurt the blade or mess up its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I cover this topic a lot in my video workshops.

What are the steps to use your tools safely?

– Make sure to think about safety whenever you use chisels and gouges for wood carving!

If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Usually, traditional woodcarvers don't rely on power tools, except for getting basswood or another type of carvable wood ready. Safety for woodworkers typically involves thinking about power tools. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.

I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. Feel free to ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief, low relief, and round carving. If you aim to become a carver, see my lessons; I cover all carving styles.

Ways to store your tools

Keep your tools clean! Rust can be an issue with woodcarving tools. To prevent it, keep your tools dry. Avoid storing them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to ward off rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
