This could be one of the most challenging questions.
Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Save your money from being wasted on cheap tools. The market has many tools available. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

Your tools are yours since you bought them. But don't be afraid of them or handle them badly. They will last longer if you look after them, so here's some advice on how to do that:
– If you're a beginner who has never tried carving before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something feels off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is especially important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk about sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
What is the safe way to use your tools?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Most traditional woodcarvers don't use power tools; they just use them to prepare basswood or other carvable wood. Woodworkers often consider power tools when thinking of safety. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Feel free to ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is only one form of wood carving; there are lots of others. High relief, low relief, carving in the round, and more. If you want to learn carving, view my lessons; I teach the whole range.
How should you store your tools?
Make sure your tools are clean! Rust is a problem for woodcarving tools. To avoid rust, keep them dry. Don't put them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to stop rust. Every now and then, wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last a very long time. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
