This is probably one of the most difficult question.
Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. There are many tools available. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Carving is meant to be relaxing and shouldn't be difficult. Begin carving with proper tools.

Your tools are your tools—you bought them and they're yours. But that doesn't mean you should be afraid of them or abuse them. They will last longer if you take care of them, so here's some advice on how to do just that:
– If you're just starting out and have never carved before, the first thing you should do is learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems wrong, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening repeatedly until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could hurt the blade or mess up its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I cover this topic a lot in my video workshops.
How should you use your tools safely?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
When you feel unsafe, make sure to wear safety gloves when handling woodworking tools! Traditional Woodcarvers usually do not use power tools, only to prepare basswood or another type of carvable lumber before carving. Safety for woodworkers typically involves thinking about power tools. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. Feel free to ask me how I know. At the beginning of your wood carving journey, you don't consider much; you just take your knife and start carving. Whittling is just one kind of wood carving; there are several more. High relief carving, low relief carving, round carving, and so on. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
How should you store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools can rust. To stop rust, keep your tools dry. Don't store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, use machine oil to stop rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last forever. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
