What woodcarving tools are necessary for me?
Does not matter if you just start a wood carving journey or carved for a while, good tools are a MUST! Avoid spending money on cheap carving tools. There are plenty of carving tools for sale. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Wood carving can be relaxing and shouldn't be tough. Use good tools to start wood carving.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you're new and haven't carved before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, rewatch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening until you understand. This is really important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge with anything other than the proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk a lot about sharpening in my video workshops.
What are the steps to use your tools safely?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
Wear safety gloves if you feel unsafe while using woodworking tools! Generally, traditional woodcarvers avoid power tools and only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. Ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is one type of wood carving; plenty others exist. What is the best way to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools can rust. To stop rust, keep your tools dry. Don't store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, use machine oil to stop rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last forever. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
