This may be one of the most complex questions.
Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. There are plenty of carving tools for sale. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Wood carving is a relaxing hobby and shouldn't be hard. Start your carving journey with the right tools.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If You are a beginner and never carved before, step number one would be: Learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If there's something that doesn't seem right, watch woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening again and again until you understand what's going on. This is especially important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or sharpening machine. I am talking a lot in my video workshops about sharpening.
Using your tools safely: How?
– Always think about safety when working with wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
Feel unsafe? Wear safety gloves when doing woodworking! Generally, traditional woodcarvers avoid power tools and only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. Woodworkers often consider power tools when thinking of safety. But hand tools could be as dangerous as power tools.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Inquire how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is just one kind of wood carving; there are several more. High relief, low relief, carving in the round, and more. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
What is the best way to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
