Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Save your money from being wasted on cheap tools. There are plenty of carving tools for sale. Don't buy them just because they are cheap. Carving should be enjoyable and not a struggle. Start a wood carving journey with good tools.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If you are new to woodcarving and have never tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my wood carving school about tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is very important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than the right sharpening stone or machine. I discuss this a lot in my video workshops.
What are the steps to use your tools safely?

If you are worried about safety, use safety gloves while working with woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers typically avoid power tools; they only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. And when woodworkers think about safety, they automatically think about power tools. But hand tools could be as dangerous as power tools.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. Inquire how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is one type of wood carving; plenty others exist. High relief, low relief, and round carving. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
How to store your tools?
Make sure your tools are clean! Rust is a problem for woodcarving tools. To avoid rust, keep them dry. Don't put them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to stop rust. Every now and then, wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last a very long time. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
