This could be one of the most challenging questions.
Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
Does not matter if you just start a wood carving journey or carved for a while, good tools are a MUST! Do not waste money on inexpensive carving tools. There are a lot of tools available in the market. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving is supposed to be relaxing and not hard work. Use good tools to start wood carving.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If you are new to woodcarving and have never tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my wood carving school about tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is very important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than the right sharpening stone or machine. I discuss this a lot in my video workshops.
How can you safely use your tools?
– Always remember safety when using wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
Feel unsafe? Wear safety gloves when doing woodworking! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. However, hand tools can be just as dangerous.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. You can ask me how I know. When you start carving wood, you don't think much about it; you just pick up your knife and begin. Whittling is just one kind of wood carving; there are several more. High relief, low relief, and round carving. If you want to learn carving, view my lessons; I teach the whole range.
What is the best way to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
