Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Avoid spending money on cheap carving tools. You will find many tools out there. Refrain from buying them just because they seem cheap. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Begin wood carving with good tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I discuss sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
What is the safe way to use your tools?

Wear safety gloves if you feel unsafe while using woodworking tools! Usually, traditional woodcarvers don't rely on power tools, except for getting basswood or another type of carvable wood ready. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.
I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. Just ask me how I know. At the beginning of your wood carving journey, you don't consider much; you just take your knife and start carving. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief carving, low relief carving, round carving, and so on. How should you store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
