______

This could be one of the most challenging questions.

What woodcarving tools are necessary for me?

No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. You will find many tools out there. Avoid buying them simply because they are affordable. Carving is meant to be relaxing and shouldn't be difficult. Begin carving with proper tools.

Your tools are yours since you bought them. But don't be afraid of them or handle them badly. They will last longer if you look after them, so here's some advice on how to do that:

– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I discuss sharpening a lot in my video workshops.

What are the steps to use your tools safely?

– Always think about safety when working with wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!

Feel unsafe? Wear safety gloves when doing woodworking! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. For woodworkers, safety is usually linked with power tools. However, hand tools can be just as dangerous.

I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Just ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is just one kind of wood carving; there are several more. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you want to learn carving, view my lessons; I teach the whole range.

Best methods to store tools

Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
