This could be one of the most challenging questions.
What woodcarving tools are necessary for me?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Do not waste money on inexpensive carving tools. Many tools can be found in stores. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Carving is supposed to be relaxing and not hard work. Use good tools to start wood carving.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If you are new to woodcarving and have never tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my wood carving school about tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is very important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than the right sharpening stone or machine. I discuss this a lot in my video workshops.
How should you use your tools safely?
– Always remember safety when using wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
When you feel unsafe, make sure to wear safety gloves when handling woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. Woodworkers often consider power tools when thinking of safety. Still, hand tools can be equally hazardous.
I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. Ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you want to learn carving, view my lessons; I teach the whole range.
What is the best way to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Rust can be an issue with woodcarving tools. To prevent it, keep your tools dry. Avoid storing them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to ward off rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
