This could be one of the most challenging questions.
Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. There are plenty of carving tools for sale. Don't buy them just because they are cheap. Carving is meant to be relaxing and shouldn't be difficult. Start your carving journey with the right tools.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If you're just starting out and have never carved before, the first thing you should do is learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems wrong, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening repeatedly until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could hurt the blade or mess up its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I cover this topic a lot in my video workshops.
What are the steps to use your tools safely?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you are worried about safety, use safety gloves while working with woodworking tools! Most traditional woodcarvers don't use power tools; they just use them to prepare basswood or other carvable wood. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. Still, hand tools can be equally hazardous.
I am a skilled woodcarver, and I understand this well. Just ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
How should you store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
