This could be one of the most challenging questions.
Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Do not waste money on inexpensive carving tools. There are plenty of carving tools for sale. Refrain from buying them just because they seem cheap. Carving is supposed to be relaxing and not hard work. Use good tools to start wood carving.

Your tools are your tools—you bought them and they're yours. But that doesn't mean you should be afraid of them or abuse them. They will last longer if you take care of them, so here's some advice on how to do just that:
– If you're just starting out and have never carved before, the first thing you should do is learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems wrong, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening repeatedly until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could hurt the blade or mess up its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I cover this topic a lot in my video workshops.
What is the safe way to use your tools?
– Be mindful of safety when working with wood carving tools such as chisels and gouges!
When you feel unsafe, make sure to wear safety gloves when handling woodworking tools! Most traditional woodcarvers don't use power tools; they just use them to prepare basswood or other carvable wood. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. However, hand tools can be just as dangerous.
I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. Feel free to ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you aim to become a carver, see my lessons; I cover all carving styles.
How to store your tools?
Make sure your tools are clean! Rust is a problem for woodcarving tools. To avoid rust, keep them dry. Don't put them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to stop rust. Every now and then, wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last a very long time. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
