This is likely one of the toughest questions.
Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Don't spend your money on low-quality tools. Many tools can be found in stores. Avoid buying them simply because they are affordable. Wood carving is a relaxing hobby and shouldn't be hard. Begin carving with proper tools.

These tools are yours because you bought them. But don't be scared of them or use them wrongly. They will last longer if you care for them properly, so here is some advice on how to do it:
– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I discuss sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
What are the steps to use your tools safely?
– Always remember safety when using wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
Wear safety gloves if you feel unsafe while using woodworking tools! Generally, traditional woodcarvers avoid power tools and only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. However, hand tools can be just as dangerous.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Just ask me how I know. When you just start a wood carving journey, you don't really think about this, you just grab your chip carving knife and start whittling away. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you aim to become a carver, see my lessons; I cover all carving styles.
How should you store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Rust is a common issue with woodcarving tools. To avoid it, store your tools in a dry place. Do not put them in the garage if you live somewhere humid. Also, apply machine oil to prevent rust. Once in a while, wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last for many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
