This might be one of the hardest questions.
What are the best woodcarving tools to get?
It doesn't matter if you are just beginning wood carving or have been at it for some time, quality tools are crucial! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. Many tools can be found in stores. Refrain from buying them just because they seem cheap. Carving should be enjoyable and not a struggle. Begin wood carving with good tools.

These tools are yours because you bought them. But don't be scared of them or use them wrongly. They will last longer if you care for them properly, so here is some advice on how to do it:
– If you are new to woodcarving and have never tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my wood carving school about tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is very important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than the right sharpening stone or machine. I discuss this a lot in my video workshops.
Using your tools safely: How?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you don't feel safe, put on safety gloves when using woodworking tools! Usually, traditional woodcarvers don't rely on power tools, except for getting basswood or another type of carvable wood ready. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. However, hand tools can be just as dangerous.
I am a seasoned woodcarver and I know my craft. You can ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
How to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)

Focus on an easy design first.
