This is possibly one of the trickiest questions.
Which woodcarving tools do I need to purchase?
Regardless of whether you are starting your wood carving journey or have been carving for years, having the right tools is important! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. There are plenty of carving tools for sale. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Wood carving can be relaxing and shouldn't be tough. Begin carving with proper tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you're new and haven't carved before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, rewatch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening until you understand. This is really important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge with anything other than the proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk a lot about sharpening in my video workshops.
What are the steps to use your tools safely?
– Always keep safety in mind when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you are worried about safety, use safety gloves while working with woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. For woodworkers, safety is usually linked with power tools. But hand tools could be as dangerous as power tools.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. You can ask me how I know. When you just start a wood carving journey, you don't really think about this, you just grab your chip carving knife and start whittling away. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you aim to become a carver, see my lessons; I cover all carving styles.
What is the best way to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Rust can be an issue with woodcarving tools. To prevent it, keep your tools dry. Avoid storing them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to ward off rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
