What woodcarving tools are necessary for me?
Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. There are a lot of tools available in the market. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Use good tools to start wood carving.

Your tools are yours since you bought them. But don't be afraid of them or handle them badly. They will last longer if you look after them, so here's some advice on how to do that:
– If You are a beginner and never carved before, step number one would be: Learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If there's something that doesn't seem right, watch woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening again and again until you understand what's going on. This is especially important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or sharpening machine. I am talking a lot in my video workshops about sharpening.
How should you use your tools safely?

When you feel unsafe, make sure to wear safety gloves when handling woodworking tools! Generally, traditional woodcarvers avoid power tools and only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. Woodworkers often consider power tools when thinking of safety. Hand tools can also pose similar dangers.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. Just ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. Best methods to store tools
Make sure your tools are clean! Rust is a problem for woodcarving tools. To avoid rust, keep them dry. Don't put them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to stop rust. Every now and then, wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last a very long time. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
