This is possibly one of the trickiest questions.
Which woodcarving tools do I need to purchase?
It doesn't matter if you are just beginning wood carving or have been at it for some time, quality tools are crucial! Avoid spending money on cheap carving tools. The market has many tools available. Avoid buying them simply because they are affordable. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Use good tools to start wood carving.

Your tools are your tools—you bought them and they're yours. But that doesn't mean you should be afraid of them or abuse them. They will last longer if you take care of them, so here's some advice on how to do just that:
– If you're a beginner who has never tried carving before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something feels off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is especially important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk about sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
Using your tools safely: How?
– Be mindful of safety when working with wood carving tools such as chisels and gouges!
When you feel unsafe, make sure to wear safety gloves when handling woodworking tools! Traditional Woodcarvers usually do not use power tools, only to prepare basswood or another type of carvable lumber before carving. Woodworkers often consider power tools when thinking of safety. Hand tools can also pose similar dangers.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. You can ask me how I know. At the beginning of your wood carving journey, you don't consider much; you just take your knife and start carving. Whittling is just one kind of wood carving; there are several more. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you want to learn carving, view my lessons; I teach the whole range.
What is the best way to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools can rust. To stop rust, keep your tools dry. Don't store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, use machine oil to stop rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last forever. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
