What tools do I need for woodcarving?
Regardless of whether you are starting your wood carving journey or have been carving for years, having the right tools is important! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. You will find many tools out there. Don't purchase them merely because they are inexpensive. Wood carving is a relaxing hobby and shouldn't be hard. Use good tools to start wood carving.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I discuss sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
Using your tools safely: How?

Wear safety gloves if you feel unsafe while using woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Still, hand tools can be equally hazardous.
I am a seasoned woodcarver and I know my craft. Inquire how I know. When you just start a wood carving journey, you don't really think about this, you just grab your chip carving knife and start whittling away. Whittling is only one form of wood carving; there are lots of others. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
How to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
