Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Avoid spending money on cheap carving tools. You will find many tools out there. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Wood carving is a relaxing hobby and shouldn't be hard. Start a wood carving journey with good tools.

Your tools are yours since you bought them. But don't be afraid of them or handle them badly. They will last longer if you look after them, so here's some advice on how to do that:
– If you're just starting out and have never carved before, the first thing you should do is learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems wrong, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening repeatedly until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could hurt the blade or mess up its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I cover this topic a lot in my video workshops.

If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers typically avoid power tools; they only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. How should you store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools can rust. To stop rust, keep your tools dry. Don't store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, use machine oil to stop rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last forever. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
