This may be one of the most complex questions.
What tools do I need for woodcarving?
Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. Many tools can be found in stores. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving should be enjoyable and not a struggle. Use good tools to start wood carving.

Your tools are your tools—you bought them and they're yours. But that doesn't mean you should be afraid of them or abuse them. They will last longer if you take care of them, so here's some advice on how to do just that:
– If you're new and haven't carved before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, rewatch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening until you understand. This is really important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge with anything other than the proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk a lot about sharpening in my video workshops.
What is the safe way to use your tools?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
When you feel unsafe, make sure to wear safety gloves when handling woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Still, hand tools can be equally hazardous.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. You can ask me how I know. At the beginning of your wood carving journey, you don't consider much; you just take your knife and start carving. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief carving, low relief carving, round carving, and so on. If you aim to become a carver, see my lessons; I cover all carving styles.
How should you store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Rust can be an issue with woodcarving tools. To prevent it, keep your tools dry. Avoid storing them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to ward off rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
