This could be one of the most challenging questions.
Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Do not waste money on inexpensive carving tools. Many tools can be found in stores. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If you are new to woodcarving and have never tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my wood carving school about tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is very important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than the right sharpening stone or machine. I discuss this a lot in my video workshops.
How to use your tools safely?
– Be mindful of safety when working with wood carving tools such as chisels and gouges!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Traditional Woodcarvers usually do not use power tools, only to prepare basswood or another type of carvable lumber before carving. Woodworkers often consider power tools when thinking of safety. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Inquire how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief, low relief, carving in the round, and more. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
Ways to store your tools
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools can rust. To stop rust, keep your tools dry. Don't store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, use machine oil to stop rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last forever. (Some of mine are 300 years old)

Work on a simple design first.
