This is likely one of the toughest questions.
What tools do I need for woodcarving?
No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Do not waste money on inexpensive carving tools. The market has many tools available. Refrain from buying them just because they seem cheap. Carving should be enjoyable and not a struggle. Begin carving with proper tools.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If you are new to woodcarving and have never tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my wood carving school about tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is very important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than the right sharpening stone or machine. I discuss this a lot in my video workshops.
Using your tools safely: How?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
Feel unsafe? Wear safety gloves when doing woodworking! Usually, traditional woodcarvers don't rely on power tools, except for getting basswood or another type of carvable wood ready. For woodworkers, safety is usually linked with power tools. Still, hand tools can be equally hazardous.
I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. Just ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
Storing your tools properly
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools can rust. To stop rust, keep your tools dry. Don't store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, use machine oil to stop rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last forever. (Some of mine are 300 years old)

Focus on an easy design first.

Look at the design's shape closely
Do a test on a scrap wood piece first
