This may be one of the most complex questions.
What are the best woodcarving tools to get?
No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Save your money from being wasted on cheap tools. Many tools can be found in stores. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving is supposed to be relaxing and not hard work. Begin wood carving with good tools.

These tools are yours because you bought them. But don't be scared of them or use them wrongly. They will last longer if you care for them properly, so here is some advice on how to do it:
– If You are a beginner and never carved before, step number one would be: Learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If there's something that doesn't seem right, watch woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening again and again until you understand what's going on. This is especially important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or sharpening machine. I am talking a lot in my video workshops about sharpening.
What is the safe way to use your tools?
– Always keep safety in mind when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
Feel unsafe? Wear safety gloves when doing woodworking! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. Safety for woodworkers typically involves thinking about power tools. But hand tools could be as dangerous as power tools.
I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. You can ask me how I know. When you start carving wood, you don't think much about it; you just pick up your knife and begin. Whittling is one type of wood carving; plenty others exist. High relief, low relief, and round carving. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
Ways to store your tools
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)

Work on a simple design first.
