This could be one of the most challenging questions.
Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. You will find many tools out there. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Wood carving can be relaxing and shouldn't be tough. Start your carving journey with the right tools.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I discuss sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
What is the safe way to use your tools?
– Be mindful of safety when working with wood carving tools such as chisels and gouges!
Feel unsafe? Wear safety gloves when doing woodworking! Usually, traditional woodcarvers don't rely on power tools, except for getting basswood or another type of carvable wood ready. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. Feel free to ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is only one form of wood carving; there are lots of others. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you aim to become a carver, see my lessons; I cover all carving styles.
How to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
