Regardless of whether you are starting your wood carving journey or have been carving for years, having the right tools is important! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. You will find many tools out there. Don't buy them just because they are cheap. Wood carving is a relaxing hobby and shouldn't be hard. Use good tools to start wood carving.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I discuss sharpening a lot in my video workshops.

When you feel unsafe, make sure to wear safety gloves when handling woodworking tools! Most traditional woodcarvers don't use power tools; they just use them to prepare basswood or other carvable wood. Woodworkers often consider power tools when thinking of safety. Hand tools can also pose similar dangers.

Ways to store your tools
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
