This is possibly one of the trickiest questions.
Which woodcarving tools do I need to purchase?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Don't spend your money on low-quality tools. There are many tools available. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Wood carving can be relaxing and shouldn't be tough. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you're new and haven't carved before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, rewatch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening until you understand. This is really important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge with anything other than the proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk a lot about sharpening in my video workshops.
What is the safe way to use your tools?
– Always remember safety when using wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Usually, traditional woodcarvers don't rely on power tools, except for getting basswood or another type of carvable wood ready. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. Still, hand tools can be equally hazardous.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Feel free to ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief, low relief, and round carving. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
Storing your tools properly
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
