What woodcarving tools should I buy?
It doesn't matter if you are just beginning wood carving or have been at it for some time, quality tools are crucial! Don't spend your money on low-quality tools. There are plenty of carving tools for sale. Don't purchase them merely because they are inexpensive. Carving is meant to be relaxing and shouldn't be difficult. Start a wood carving journey with good tools.

Your tools are yours since you bought them. But don't be afraid of them or handle them badly. They will last longer if you look after them, so here's some advice on how to do that:
– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I discuss sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
How to use your tools safely?

If you are worried about safety, use safety gloves while working with woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers typically avoid power tools; they only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. For woodworkers, safety is usually linked with power tools. However, hand tools can be just as dangerous.

Keep your tools clean! Rust can be an issue with woodcarving tools. To prevent it, keep your tools dry. Avoid storing them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to ward off rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
