This may be one of the most complex questions.
What woodcarving tools should I buy?
No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. There are a lot of tools available in the market. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Wood carving can be relaxing and shouldn't be tough. Start your carving journey with the right tools.

These tools are yours because you bought them. But don't be scared of them or use them wrongly. They will last longer if you care for them properly, so here is some advice on how to do it:
– If You are a beginner and never carved before, step number one would be: Learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If there's something that doesn't seem right, watch woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening again and again until you understand what's going on. This is especially important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or sharpening machine. I am talking a lot in my video workshops about sharpening.
How should you use your tools safely?
– Always think about safety when working with wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Hand tools can also pose similar dangers.
I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. Just ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is one type of wood carving; plenty others exist. High relief, low relief, carving in the round, and more. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
Best methods to store tools
Make sure your tools are clean! Rust is a problem for woodcarving tools. To avoid rust, keep them dry. Don't put them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to stop rust. Every now and then, wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last a very long time. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
