Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Avoid spending money on cheap carving tools. There are many tools available. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Wood carving is a relaxing hobby and shouldn't be hard. Begin wood carving with good tools.

Your tools are yours since you bought them. But don't be afraid of them or handle them badly. They will last longer if you look after them, so here's some advice on how to do that:
– If you're a beginner who has never tried carving before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something feels off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is especially important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk about sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
How should you use your tools safely?
– Make sure to think about safety whenever you use chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you are worried about safety, use safety gloves while working with woodworking tools! Most traditional woodcarvers don't use power tools; they just use them to prepare basswood or other carvable wood. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. But hand tools could be as dangerous as power tools.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. Ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you want to learn wood carving, check my lessons; I teach all types.
Best methods to store tools
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools can rust. To stop rust, keep your tools dry. Don't store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, use machine oil to stop rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last forever. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
