Which woodcarving tools do I need to purchase?
Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Save your money from being wasted on cheap tools. You will find many tools out there. Don't purchase them merely because they are inexpensive. Carving is supposed to be relaxing and not hard work. Use good tools to start wood carving.

Your tools are your tools—you bought them and they're yours. But that doesn't mean you should be afraid of them or abuse them. They will last longer if you take care of them, so here's some advice on how to do just that:
– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I discuss sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
How to use your tools safely?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Traditional Woodcarvers usually do not use power tools, only to prepare basswood or another type of carvable lumber before carving. Safety for woodworkers typically involves thinking about power tools. Still, hand tools can be equally hazardous.
I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. Ask me how I know. When you start carving wood, you don't think much about it; you just pick up your knife and begin. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief carving, low relief carving, round carving, and so on. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
Best methods to store tools
Keep your tools clean! Rust is a common issue with woodcarving tools. To avoid it, store your tools in a dry place. Do not put them in the garage if you live somewhere humid. Also, apply machine oil to prevent rust. Once in a while, wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last for many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
