What tools do I need for woodcarving?
Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. There are a lot of tools available in the market. Don't purchase them merely because they are inexpensive. Carving is meant to be relaxing and shouldn't be difficult. Begin carving with proper tools.

Your tools are yours since you bought them. But don't be afraid of them or handle them badly. They will last longer if you look after them, so here's some advice on how to do that:
– If you're just starting out and have never carved before, the first thing you should do is learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems wrong, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening repeatedly until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could hurt the blade or mess up its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. Wear safety gloves if you feel unsafe while using woodworking tools! Traditional Woodcarvers usually do not use power tools, only to prepare basswood or another type of carvable lumber before carving. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Yet, hand tools are also risky.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. You can ask me how I know. When you start carving wood, you don't think much about it; you just pick up your knife and begin. How to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
