This is likely one of the toughest questions.
Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
It doesn't matter if you are just beginning wood carving or have been at it for some time, quality tools are crucial! Avoid spending money on cheap carving tools. You will find many tools out there. Refrain from buying them just because they seem cheap. Wood carving can be relaxing and shouldn't be tough. Start your carving journey with the right tools.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If you're new and haven't carved before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, rewatch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening until you understand. This is really important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge with anything other than the proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk a lot about sharpening in my video workshops.
How to use your tools safely?
– Make sure to think about safety whenever you use chisels and gouges for wood carving!
Feel unsafe? Wear safety gloves when doing woodworking! Most traditional woodcarvers don't use power tools; they just use them to prepare basswood or other carvable wood. For woodworkers, safety is usually linked with power tools. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.
I am a seasoned woodcarver and I know my craft. You can ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is one type of wood carving; plenty others exist. High relief, low relief, and round carving. If you want to learn carving, view my lessons; I teach the whole range.
How to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Rust is a common issue with woodcarving tools. To avoid it, store your tools in a dry place. Do not put them in the garage if you live somewhere humid. Also, apply machine oil to prevent rust. Once in a while, wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last for many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
