This may be one of the most complex questions.

What tools do I need for woodcarving?

No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Save your money from being wasted on cheap tools. There are many tools available. Don't buy them just because they are cheap. Carving is supposed to be relaxing and not hard work. Begin carving with proper tools.

Your tools are yours since you bought them. But don't be afraid of them or handle them badly. They will last longer if you look after them, so here's some advice on how to do that:

– If you're new and haven't carved before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, rewatch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening until you understand. This is really important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge with anything other than the proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk a lot about sharpening in my video workshops.

Using your tools safely: How?

– Always keep safety in mind when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!

Feel unsafe? Wear safety gloves when doing woodworking! Generally, traditional woodcarvers avoid power tools and only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. For woodworkers, safety is usually linked with power tools. But hand tools could be as dangerous as power tools.

I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. You can ask me how I know. When you just start a wood carving journey, you don't really think about this, you just grab your chip carving knife and start whittling away. Whittling is just one kind of wood carving; there are several more. High relief carving, low relief carving, round carving, and so on. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.

Ways to store your tools

Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
