This may be one of the most complex questions.
What tools do I need for woodcarving?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. There are a lot of tools available in the market. Don't buy them just because they are cheap. Wood carving is a relaxing hobby and shouldn't be hard. Start your carving journey with the right tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you are new to woodcarving and have never tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my wood carving school about tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is very important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than the right sharpening stone or machine. I discuss this a lot in my video workshops.
What is the safe way to use your tools?
– Always think about safety when working with wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
Wear safety gloves if you feel unsafe while using woodworking tools! Generally, traditional woodcarvers avoid power tools and only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. Woodworkers often consider power tools when thinking of safety. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.
I am a seasoned woodcarver and I know my craft. Just ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you want to learn carving, view my lessons; I teach the whole range.
Storing your tools properly
Make sure your tools are clean! Rust is a problem for woodcarving tools. To avoid rust, keep them dry. Don't put them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to stop rust. Every now and then, wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last a very long time. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
