Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. There are many tools available. Don't buy them just because they are cheap. Wood carving is a relaxing hobby and shouldn't be hard. Begin carving with proper tools.

Your tools are your tools—you bought them and they're yours. But that doesn't mean you should be afraid of them or abuse them. They will last longer if you take care of them, so here's some advice on how to do just that:
– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I discuss sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
How to use your tools safely?

If you are worried about safety, use safety gloves while working with woodworking tools! Generally, traditional woodcarvers avoid power tools and only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. But hand tools could be as dangerous as power tools.
I am a skilled woodcarver, and I understand this well. Ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Ways to store your tools
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
