This is likely one of the toughest questions.
What tools do I need for woodcarving?
It doesn't matter if you are just beginning wood carving or have been at it for some time, quality tools are crucial! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. There are a lot of tools available in the market. Don't purchase them merely because they are inexpensive. Carving is meant to be relaxing and shouldn't be difficult. Begin carving with proper tools.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If you are new to woodcarving and have never tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my wood carving school about tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is very important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than the right sharpening stone or machine. I discuss this a lot in my video workshops.
Using your tools safely: How?
– Always keep safety in mind when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you don't feel safe, put on safety gloves when using woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. But hand tools could be as dangerous as power tools.
I am a seasoned woodcarver and I know my craft. Ask me how I know. When you start carving wood, you don't think much about it; you just pick up your knife and begin. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
How should you store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)

Focus on an easy design first.
begin with something easy
Pay attention to how the design is shaped
Test it first on a piece of scrap wood
