______
This is probably one of the most difficult question.
What woodcarving tools are necessary for me?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Avoid spending money on cheap carving tools. Many tools can be found in stores. Refrain from buying them just because they seem cheap. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you're a beginner who has never tried carving before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something feels off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is especially important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk about sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
Using your tools safely: How?
– Be mindful of safety when working with wood carving tools such as chisels and gouges!
When you feel unsafe, make sure to wear safety gloves when handling woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. And when woodworkers think about safety, they automatically think about power tools. Still, hand tools can be equally hazardous.
I am a skilled woodcarver, and I understand this well. You can ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief carving, low relief carving, round carving, and so on. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
Best methods to store tools
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools can rust. To stop rust, keep your tools dry. Don't store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, use machine oil to stop rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last forever. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
